Rejuvenate Your Skin: How PRP Facial Treatments Work and What to Expect
Are you looking for a natural way to refresh and rejuvenate your look? You may want to consider a PRP facial. This innovative treatment uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) made from your own blood to stimulate collagen production and enhance your skin’s natural rejuvenation process.
At A&U Family Medicine in Sugar Land, Texas, Dr. Hammad Zaidi and our team of aesthetic medicine experts offer PRP facials to improve skin tone, texture, and radiance. Understanding how the treatment works and what to expect can help you determine if it’s the right option for helping you achieve your skin care goals.
What is a PRP facial?
A PRP facial is a cosmetic treatment that harnesses your body’s natural healing abilities to improve the look and feel of your skin.
PRP contains a high concentration of platelets, tiny blood cell fragments that play a critical role in healing and tissue repair. When activated, platelets release growth factors and proteins that stimulate cellular regeneration and support the production of healthy new tissue.
We make PRP by drawing a sample of your blood and placing it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the red and white blood cells. We then combine a concentrated amount of platelets with the plasma.
PRP has long been used to support healing in sports injuries and joint conditions such as osteoarthritis. Today, it’s also used in aesthetic medicine to improve skin texture, reduce signs of aging, and restore a more youthful appearance.
How PRP facial treatments work
PRP facials work by stimulating the production of collagen, elastin, and other structural components that keeps your skin firm, smooth, and resilient.
Collagen and elastin are proteins responsible for maintaining skin’s strength and elasticity. As you age, production of these proteins naturally declines, contributing to wrinkles, fine lines, and skin laxity.
The growth factors found in PRP help encourage collagen remodeling and accelerate skin cell turnover, resulting in healthier, more vibrant-looking skin.
Some of the benefits of PRP facial include:
- Softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improving skin tone and complexion
- Reducing the appearance of brown spots and sun damage
- Minimizing acne scars
- Enhancing skin firmness and elasticity
- Restoring a healthy, youthful glow
Because PRP uses your own blood for treatment, the risk of allergic reactions or adverse side effects are low.
What to expect during your appointment
Before recommending any treatment, our aesthetic specialists at A&U Family Medicine meet with you to discuss your concerns, goals, and available options. If a PRP facial is right for you, we provide detailed preparation instructions.
If you take anti-inflammatory medication and supplements, we recommend stopping them before your PRP facial. PRP works by activating the inflammatory process for healing and anti-inflammatories may hinder results.
During your appointment, we draw the blood for your PRP, clean your facial skin with an antiseptic agent, and apply a numbing cream to minimize discomfort. We then inject the PRP into your skin using a needle or a microneedling tool.
Your entire appointment may take about an hour, but the injections are relatively quick.
Recovery and aftercare
You may notice some redness and swelling immediately following your PRP facial. These side effects are temporary, and they resolve within a few days.
Patients can resume most of their usual activities shortly after treatment. However, we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours to reduce risk of bruising.
While you may notice an improvement in skin tone soon after treatment, collagen production takes time. You should see improvements in skin firmness, texture, and overall appearance over the following weeks as your skin continues to regenerate.
To support healing and maintain your results:
- Apply sunscreen daily
- Limit excessive sun exposure
- Follow all post-treatment instructions
- Maintain a healthy skin care routine
Protecting your skin from ultraviolet (UV) damage is especially important, as sun exposure can accelerate collagen breakdown and contribute to premature aging.
Results from a PRP facial can last a year or more. Repeating the treatment can help you maintain your youthful look.
