Botox Q&A

How does Botox work?

Botox is a neuromodulator, enabling it to temporarily relax targeted muscles. When used in cosmetic treatments, this addresses the source of dynamic wrinkles, which develop from repeated facial expressions. Skin naturally loses some of its elasticity and strength over time, creating more permanent lines as you emote.

Botox injections relax the muscles under your skin that create the lines and creases, but they can also relax other tense muscles to provide pain relief.

What does Botox treat?

Botox is known worldwide for its cosmetic uses, smoothing out aesthetic concerns such as:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines on the upper nose

Botox has more pain-reduction applications than many people realize. Dr. Zaidi uses Botox to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, relaxing the jaw muscles for months of reduced jaw discomfort. It’s also FDA-approved to treat chronic migraines, making them less frequent and intense.

What can I expect during a Botox appointment?

You’ll first meet with Dr. Zaidi to discuss your goals, medical history, and the areas you want to treat. Inform him about all medications, supplements, and blood thinners you’re taking, as some can increase bruising.

He’ll cleanse and disinfect the treatment area and can use an ice pack or numbing cream to ensure your comfort.

Using a very fine needle, Dr. Zaidi will carefully inject small amounts of Botox into the target muscles. You should only feel a tiny pinprick, a pinch, or a mild stinging sensation. In most cases, your injections take 20-30 minutes or less.

What can I expect after my Botox treatment?

You can get back to your regular daily activities right after the procedure, but avoid strenuous activity or rubbing the treated area for about 24 hours. It’s normal to experience mild side effects like temporary swelling, redness, or bruising, but they should subside quickly.

If you received injections for TMJ, you’ll likely notice relief within a few days. The effects typically last for about 3 to 6 months, and follow-up treatments can maintain relief.

If you have migraines, Dr. Zaidi may recommend treatment every 2 to 3 weeks to effectively manage migraine frequency and intensity.
